Dr. Austin Gallagher Shares Details About His New Shark Week Specials For Discovery!

Words cannot express how terribly excited we get for Discovery’s Shark Week each and every year and if you are anything like us, then you are sure to devour all of the amazing shark-filled specials that Discovery has to offer. This year, they are providing some pretty amazing specials and we had the opportunity to catch up with Dr. Austin Gallagher to discuss two very information specials airing during Shark Week, “Belly Of The Beast” and “Monster Mako: Fresh Blood” for a special inside look behind these magnificent creatures.

“Belly of the Beast” is described, “In a Shark Week first, researchers with cameras brave a great white shark feeding frenzy from inside a life-size whale decoy. Their findings could be the key to finding the biggest great white shark in South African history.”

This was probably one of the most intriguing Shark Week specials we have seen! While we have seen plenty of shark action from the inside of diving cages, this is the first time that a decoy model has been built literally putting the researcher directly into the middle of a potential shark feeding frenzy. It is both terrifying and fascinating at the same time!

In “Monster Mako: Fresh Blood”, “Twelve-foot-long monster mako sharks compete head-to-head with great whites for prey off the coast of California. Using a custom clear, acrylic diving bell, Dr. Austin Gallagher and legendary free diver Andre Musgrove get up close with both predators and track makos breaching eight feet out of the ocean.”

“Belly of the Beast: Feeding Frenzy” premiered on Discovery on July 23rd at 8 p.m. ET. “Monster Mako: Fresh Blood” premieres on Discovery on July 27th at 9 p.m. ET.
