Once again, the conclusion of “13 Reasons Why” season two left us on the edge of our seats and with a bit of a bad taste in our mouth due to the fact that Bryce did not receive the judgement he truly deserved. It is an eye-opening statement on the fact that with enough money you can get away with just about anything these days, forgetting completely the lives of the victims that have been destroyed in the process.

There was a ton of controversy surrounding season two, especially with one scene in particular that focused on the sexual assault and rape of a male student that was particularly graphic in nature. Many felt that the scene was unnecessary and too horrifying to watch, however others, myself included, felt that the scene was excellently portrayed despite it’s true horrifying nature. When it comes to the critics, how come it is okay to portray the rape and sexual assault of a female character, however with a male it was considered too much? They were both equally horrific and jarring, so the critics are definitely putting up a bit of a double standard.

Netflix did take steps to defend the scene and even cancelled their premiere party for season two after the news broke of yet another school shooting incident in Houston, Texas. Season two dealt with  not only the aftermath of  student Hannah Baker’s suicide and her parent’s lawsuit against the school, but also includes a storyline about a student’s thwarted plans to shoot up a school dance in revenge for a sexual assault.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings defended the series renewal despite protest from the Parents Television Council advocacy group saying the series has been “enormously popular and successful with it’s engaging content”. He went on to acknowledge that the series is controversial, but “nobody has to watch it”.

I think that “13 Reasons Why”, as graphic as it can be, is a very accurate portrayal of what many young adults deal with on a daily basis as they try to navigate their teen years. While some of the plot lines might be a bit far-fetched it is definitely smart commentary of the trials and tribulations of high school and the occurrence of  cyber-bullying, sexual assault, consent, drug use, suicide and more.

Thank you Netflix for giving us a season three!
