Paramount Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming ‘Transformers’ spinoff film, ‘Bumblebee‘. Marking the live-action debut of director Travis Knight, the film centers around Hailee Steinfeld‘s Charlie as she navigates the cusp of adulthood. Oh–there’s some robots too. All kidding aside, it seems that–based on this trailer–the 1980’s set film will be taking a smaller, more character-centric approach than Michael Bay‘s films.
It seems that injecting new blood into the franchise is something that has been long needed, but what’s interesting here is how Knight is able to bring something other than Bay’s whiz-bang approach to storytelling. Whats particularly startling about this trailer is how polished the effects are, but maybe that’s a byproduct of not having twenty characters flying around on the screen at the same time. We also get good looks at the presumptuous villains in John Cena‘s character, as well as a more accurate depiction of what seems to be Starscream. Although the trailer itself keeps the elements of the plot close to the chest, it does serve as a great indication that this film will have a lot more spirit than its predecessors, at least in terms of tone.
In addition to Steinfeld and Cena, the film stars Pamela Adlon, Kenneth Choi, Megan Pryce, and Martin Short. Written by Christina Hodson, the film is set for a December 21st, 2018 release. In the meantime, here’s the official trailer for ‘Bumblebee’, along with a spiffy new teaser poster and official synopsis below:

Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
