The story of the woman behind the monster is finally being told in IFC Films’ Mary Shelley. IFC has released the official trailer for the film which stars Elle Fanning as Mary Shelley. The trailer shows the origin of where the idea of Frankenstein came from and what Shelley went through to get the iconic story told. Watch the trailer below.

Raised by a renowned philosopher father (Stephen Dillane) in 18th-century London, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (Elle Fanning) is a teenage dreamer determined to make her mark on the world when she meets the dashing and brilliant poet Percy Shelley (Douglas Booth). So begins a torrid, bohemian love affair marked by both passion and personal tragedy that will transform Mary and fuel the writing of her Gothic masterwork. Imbued with the imaginative spirit of its heroine, Mary Shelley brings to life the world of a trailblazing woman who defied convention and channeled her innermost demons into a legend for the ages.
Joining Fanning in the film will be Douglas Booth (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey), Maisie Williams (The New Mutants, Game of Thrones), and Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones). The film is directed by Haifaa Al-Mansour.
Mary Shelley opens in theaters May 25th and VOD June 1st.
