‘2001’ Re-Release Highlights Kubrick’s Game Changing Film

Fifty years ago Stanley Kubrick changed cinema forever.  In 1968, 2001: A Space Odyssey took audiences by storm and gave them an experience that would set the tone for all of cinema for years to come.  Kubrick’s classic has been relentlessly coverage over those fifty years, but I don’t think it’s talked about enough.

When all of your favorite filmmakers saw this movie in theaters as kids – it changed their lives.  I truly don’t know if we would have Spielberg or Star Wars without this Kubrick classic.  The film inspired so many artists, which inspired so many artists working today.  The inspiration has spiraled into fantastic cinema.

Here’s the trailer for the 50th anniversary re-release of 2001:

The cinematic experience that is something that can’t be replicated at home.  It doesn’t matter if you have a 80 inch 4K TV, the cinema wins every time.  I’m excited to see this getting a wide re-release.  As someone who is lucky and lives next to the Music Box theater in Chicago (which has many 70mm and actual film screenings), I’m excited that more people will see this movie in its native format.

Here’s what Christopher Nolan had to say about the film:

“For the first time since the original release, this 70mm print was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative. This is a true photochemical film recreation. There are no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits. This is the unrestored film – that recreates the cinematic event that audiences experienced fifty years ago.”

The 70mm 2001: A Space Odyssey screenings begin May 18, 2018.
