Weekend Watch: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Trailer Breakdown, ‘Logan’ VFX Breakdown, Andy Serkis & More

Welcome to Weekend Watch, where we highlight some of the best nerd-related videos released throughout the week. Whether it be short films, behind the scenes videos, or video essays, the only requirement is that they are about–in some shape or form–our favorite movies and TV shows!

In this edition of Weekend Watch, we take a look at a revealing Logan VFX breakdown, an interesting video essay arguing that The Incredibles is Pixar’s best film, and a really neat video where legendary motion capture actor Andy Serkis walks us through the technology has evolved through all of his performances. In addition, we have a couple of spoiler-filled videos, a video essay which breaks down a potential issue with the third act of Black Panther, and a detailed breakdown of the new Avengers: Infinity War trailer. So without further adieu, let’s jump right into the Weekend Watch!

Up first, we have an awesome Logan VFX Breakdown, courtesy of Rising Sun Pictures (via Filmisnow). Even though some of the VFX in the reel itself seem obvious (considering it’s a character like Wolverine), It’s kind of amazing to me how many invisible visual effects director James Mangold and co. managed to fit into the film. I love it when directors use VFX properly. It’s readily apparent by this Logan VFX breakdown, that Mangold is certainly one of those directors.

Next, we have a neat video essay by youtube Karsten Runquist, which explores why he thinks The Incredibles is Pixar‘s best to date. I love The Incredibles, it’s easily my favorite Pixar movie by far. With that said, it is in this writer’s humble opinion that it might not be their best–and their is most certainly a difference in that distinction. While he makes no mention of the upcoming Incredibles 2, Runquist does a good job of summarizing why The Incredibles is easily my favorite Pixar movie.

Here’s a wonderful, but all-too-short video from WIRED where Andy Serkis breaks down all of his most famous motion capture performances. In the video, Serkis takes a look at his performances in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Peter Jackson‘s King Kong, all the way through to his most recent motion capture performance with War for the Planet of the Apes. Serkis is certainly the most revered motion capture artist for his accomplishments in advancing the technology forward throughout the last two decades. Serkis can currently be seen on the big screen in Marvel’s Black Panther.

Speaking of Black Panther, here’s an interesting video essay by Nando v Movies on what he calls the film’s “Vibranium Dilemma”. Although I don’t think that this small issue is enough to fuss over, he does make a good point about how the solution to this problem would indeed raise the stakes of the third act even further. Obviously, SPOILERS lie ahead in the video, and you can read our review of the film here.

Finally, we’ll leave off in the realm (pun intended) of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a really cool breakdown by  ScreenCrush on the seemingly final trailer for Avengers: Infinity War (you can watch that here and see some images here.) In what is essentially an deep dive, easter egg hunt for hints about the plot of both the aforementioned film and Avengers 4, this trailer breakdown is perfect for anyone who can’t wait for the movie to be released to learn more. Beware though, this video contains a bunch of potential SPOILERS for Infinity War.
