Captain Marvel Will Be Influenced By 90’s Nostalgia

With production well underway on the first-ever female-lead Marvel film Captain Marvel, details about the movie have started trickling online.  The first bit of news that hit last summer at San Diego Comic Con is that Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury would in fact be co-sarring in the film set in the early 90’s.  It is believed that Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (played by Brie Larson) is the first superhero Fury meets.  It’s also rumored that the film will feature a two-eyed Nick Fury before he knew other super powered heroes existed.  The possibility for the dynamic relationship between Fury and our new hero Carl Danvers is exciting.

With the highly-anticipated release of Avengers: Infinity War right around the corner, Kevin Feige has been doing some press and revealed Captain Marvel is inspired by Terminator 2 and other action films from the 90’s.  Feige said:

“We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, “You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.” Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the MCU. It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ‘90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel.”

The 90’s are a perfect era to mine for nostalgia.  While it may be a bit subjective, the 90’s are the greatest decade.  By far.  No contest.  Having said that, it is just this writers opinion, but I’m not alone.  The 80’s have been mined for years if not decades.  I still love Stranger Things, and I like the music and movie references, but I was a 90’s kid.  The potential to set movie in the 90’s offers unlimited opportunities for unique situations.  Netflix is just getting into the 90’s nostalgia with their newest show Everything Sucks, but there is so much to pull from.

If movies and television begin to shift their nostalgia they will get a whole new audience of people 25-35 years old that have a fondness for the 90’s.  It will be interesting to see how Marvel incorporates the 90’s into Captain Marvel.  I can’t wait for a quippy Alanis Morrisette reference while the fate of the world hangs in our heroes hands.  That’d be tight.

Captain Marvel currently has a release date of March 6, 2019.
