Box Office: ‘Black Panther’ Holds Off ‘Wrinkle’

Black Panther earned an estimated $41.1 million this weekend which was enough to hold off Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time which opened with an estimated $33.3 million.  This marks the fourth consecutive week Black Panther has earned the number one spot at the box office as it’s earnings and accolades continue to grow.

Black Panther opened in its final markets worldwide, bringing its international total to $516.6 million.  Adding the foreign box office to the films domestic take of $562 million puts Black Panther over $1 billion.

There were a wide-array of new releases this weekend, but none financially bigger than Disneys A Wrinkle in Time.  Earning $33.3 million in its opening weekend is not what the studio was hoping for.  With a star-studded cast, a talented director, and a massive budget of over $100 million, Disney has to be disappointed with the opening weekend tally.  This seems to be a trend for live-action Disney movies that aren’t Satr Wars, Marvel, or a remake of a popular cartoon.  It looks like another John Carter/Tomorrowland situation, but only time will tell.

Horror newcomer The Strangers: Prey at Night opened third with $10.4 million.  Followed by Red Sparrow at number four with an estimated $8.1 million.  After ten days since its release Sparrow has earned $82.9 million worldwide.

Rounding out the top five is the fun Game Night, which earned an estimated $7.9 million.  Internationally the film has brought in $24 million for a worldwide total of just under $70 million.  Next week  will see the release of Tomb Raider.  Will Black Panther finish number one once again? Will A Wrinkle in Time bounce back and finish on top?  Will Tomb Raider break the curse of the video game movie adaption curse?  Fink out next week!

Here’s the top five weekend box office estimates:
