‘Captain Marvel’ Officially Begins Filming; Clark Gregg & More Join Cast

Marvel Studios has has officially announced the start of production on Captain Marvel, the latest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although this press release highlights mostly behind-the-camera talent, it also has revealed that Clark Gregg‘s Agent Coulson is indeed set to return in the 90’s-set period piece. In addition to Gregg, we’ve also learned that Guardians of the Galaxy alumni Lee Pace and Djimon Honsu are set to return as well.

In case you haven’t been following the development of the the film, here’s the first official synopsis, giving you a taste of what the film is about:

The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.  Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the comics, Kree race is in a war with the Skrulls, the latter of which are the villains of Captain Marvel. This is the “galactic war between two alien races” that the synopsis refers to, the former of which is the race of Pace’s Ronan the Accuser the aforementioned Guardians.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck direct from a screenplay by (takes deep breath) Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider), Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch (GLOW), along with Boden and Fleck. Ben Davis (who shot Doctor Strange) will photograph the picture, with Andy Nicholson (Gravity) serving as production designer. Here’s the full cast for Captain Marvel: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, with Clark Gregg and Jude Law.

Filming is taking place in the greater Los Angeles area, but the production will also shoot on location in Fresno, Californiain addition to locations in Louisiana, including Baton Rouge and New Orleans.  Captain Marvel is set for release in theaters on March 8, 2019.
