It appears that a few issues may arise between the new Netflix series Space Force and the U.S. government. The issue at hand is the trademarking of the name Space Force and it appears that Netflix beat the U.S. government to it!
Space Force starring Steve Carell just premiered its’ ten-episode first season on Netflix on May 29, 2020, and the comedy series is already garnering rave reviews. The series is a collaboration between Carell and The Office showrunner Greg Daniels. Needless to say, the probably did not expect any actual legal drama when coming for a name for the series, but that may be where they are headed.
Back in 2018, President Trump urged the United States to create a branch of the military that would be located in outer space, he nicknamed it “Space Force”. Well, it seems the producers for the series decided to take the name and run with it, as Carell admitted that the entire idea for the series came from just that title alone!
Due to the First Amendment, the U.S. government and the Trump administration couldn’t legally stop Netflix, Carell, and Daniels from choosing the same name for the show, however, now that Netflix has secured the proper trademarks to the name it could possibly create a bunch of confusion and possible legal battles in the future. Let’s hope that it does not come to that!
