It seems that both Maverick and Iceman are set to fly again as the long-awaited sequel, ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ has finally entered production! The sequel to 1986’s ‘Top Gun‘ has long faced development hell, not to mention the tragic death of the original’s director in Tony Scott back in 2012. Scott was originally set to return as director, but star Tom Cruise then enlisted ‘Oblivion’ and ‘Tron: Legacy‘ helmer Joseph Kosinski to step into the director’s chair. It felt like there wasn’t much movement on the film after this, but it seems that the film is back on track and currently filming.
Confirmed through both Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer‘s respective Twitter feeds, the duo celebrated the commencement of filming on the sequel with individual photos from the set. Check out the photos below:

In addition to last week’s announcements, The Wrap is also reporting that Val Kilmer is set to return for the sequel. Indeed, it seems that Kilmer will once again be playing his iconic role of Iceman in ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘. With both Cruise and Kilmer returning, the stage is now seemingly set for the sequel to attempt to match it’s predecessor. While of course plot details are being kept under wraps, the plot of the film is said to tackle how advancements in drone warfare might affect the US Navy program. Speaking with Access Hollywood, Cruise had this to say about ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘:
“We’re gonna have the same tone that we had with the first one. Stylistically it’s gonna be the same. We’re gonna have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer. Aviators are back. The need for speed, we’re gonna have big machines. It’s gonna be a competition film like the first one, and it’s gonna be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one but a progression for Maverick.”
Although this information isn’t too much to go off at this point, i’t just good to know that the sequel is actually filming after so many years of hearing people talk about this movie. Seeing as how the film is just gearing up production in San Diego, expect to see much more fro the set very soon. ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ will be distributed by Paramount and is currently set for release on July 12, 2013 .
