3 Reasons Why ‘Spawn’ is Already On the Road to Success

A few days ago, it was announced that Spawn creator Todd McFarlane had finally found his leading man in academy award-winning Jamie Foxx. The R rated reboot had been in development for quite sometime and having Foxx is definitely a huge step forward. I feel that this new version is headed for success and here are three reasons why…

Jamie Foxx is Playing the Lead Role of Spawn

In a reboot of a well-known comic book based film, you want either one of two things leading the way – An unknown actor that can become the face of the character and franchise, or a very established actor that has proven that he has acting chops – you don’t want anything in between (mediocre). The thing with having a newer face is that when you see them on screen, you wouldn’t instantly think of some other role they may have played before. When it comes to a veteran actor playing a comic book character there’s a chance that you may see them as one of their previous roles but if they are a really great actor, they can make you forget about that. The veteran actor can also bring their fanbase into the world of comic book films that maybe the fans have not yet been interested in before. Jamie Foxx has won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2005 for his role in Ray, in which he also won a Golden Globe for. He has been nominated for numerous awards and has shown that he can do comedy, drama as well as action. He’s definitely a great actor to have leading this reboot.

Blumhouse is Producing

Blumhouse has been the home for independent horror films. It has been the home to successful franchises such as Paranormal Activity, InsidiousThe Purge, and M. Knight Shyamalan’s new superhero world of Split and the upcoming Glass, but it has also housed more than just horror films. It has produced awarding-winning films such as Whiplash and Jordan Peele’s breakout hit Get Out. The fact that Jason Blum has picked up the new Spawn up is a great thing because Blum tends to let the directors do what they want and puts his full trust in them.

Todd McFarlane is Writing the Film

When you have the creator of a beloved character attached to a film for that character, it’s usually a good sign. Nobody knows the characters better than that who created them. McFarlane has writing credit for the first Spawn film but it’s a comic book credit. Say what you will about the first Spawn film but it was way ahead of its time and that was that is a big reason that it didn’t do as well as expected. Todd McFarlane has been working on the reboot for a couple of years now and he has really been passionate about it and has made sure that he has 100% control over it. Now on the flip side, McFarlane will also direct the film which will be his first feature film. If we again go back to his credits, McFarlane directed Korn’s “Freak on A Leash” music video in 1999. That video was animated combined with live-action and was probably the biggest music video of that year – so there’s that. Directing a feature film is a whole different ballgame.

We have to wait until 2019 to see how this all plays out when Spawn hits theaters.
