Weekend Watch – Oscars Edition: History of Best Picture, Sound Mixing vs. Sound Editing, Oscar Snubs & More!

Welcome to Weekend Watch, where we highlight some of the best nerd-related videos released throughout the week. Whether it be short films, behind the scenes videos, or video essays, the only requirement is that they are about–in some shape or form–our favorite movies and TV shows!

In a special super-sized Oscars edition of Weekend Watch, we delve into the complicated process of how the Academy chooses Best Picture, a wonderful series of of supercuts that show winners of several prominent categories through the years, and a duo of videos that delve into more Oscars history. Plus, we have a trio of videos that details the difference between sound editing vs. sound mixing, and finally a video that looks at the top 10 Oscar snubs. There’s a bunch to dig into here, so let’s jump right in!


Up first, this nifty video by Vanity Fair takes a look at the complicated process by which the Academy chooses it’s best picture winners:

Next, we have a series of great supercuts that highlight some of the past winners in the categories of Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best VFX, and Best Animated Feature. The videos, which come courtesy of Burger Fiction, who make awesome supercuts for just about everything film-related.

This duo of videos takes a (brief) look at the history of the oscars ceremony, along with the origin of the Oscar statuette itself. The first comes via ABC News and the second from Academy Originals:

This trio of videos (via Academy Originals) takes a look at the major differences between sound editing and sound mixing. While the first provides an overview of the difference between the two, the latter videos feature industry legend Walter Murch detailing the more subtle details that distinguish the two.

Finally, this top 10 video firm CineFix looks at the top 10 biggest Oscar snubs. In case you are unaware of some the biggest oscar snubs, this video will give you a great primer on movies that didn’t get the attention that they deserved such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Dark Knight and many classics.
