The Infinity Stones Are A “Key Driver” of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

With Avengers: Infinity War hitting traters in less than five weeks, it’s safe to assume that we can start being excited about this movie. The seemingly final trailer for the film focused primarily on Thanos’ presence in the film, and we’ve heard Josh Brolin speak on his portrayal of the “mad titan”. We also know that the plot of Avengers: infinity War revolves around Thanos’ quest to complete the coveted Infinity Gauntlet. In case you need a primer on the Gauntlet, this video does a way better job of explaining it’s comic book history than I ever could.

When speaking with a group of journalists on the set of Avengers: Infinity War last year, Joe and Anthony Russo shed some light on how the coveted infinity stones will play into the plot of the film(s):
Joe Russo: In a very complicated manner. I think that traditionally in movies there’s a MacGuffin, sometimes the MacGuffin is a person, sometimes it’s a thing. I tend to find that it’s much more emotional when a person is involved. So we have quite a few MacGuffins in this movie that have different relationships with two different people; Doctor Strange is a bearer of an Infinity Stone, he has been charged with protecting that Infinity Stone. So there are a lot of characters that will come into direct conflict with Thanos.

Anthony Russo: It’s very important to the structure of –

Joe Russo: It’s the bedrock of the film. A key driver of the film.
The idea that the infinity Stones are “the bedrock” of the film isn’t super surprising, considering that the film is entitled Avengers: Infinity War. Based on the plots of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, we know that Vision and Dr. Strange themselves bear the Mind and Time gems, respectively. We also know that the reality stone (aether) was last known to be in the possession of the collector in the post-credits scene of Thor: The Dark World, and that the power stone introduced in Guradians of the Galaxy currently resides on Xandar (R.I.P.) The space stone (tesseract) has bobbled between Earth and Asgard throughout the history of the MCU, but the last that we’ve seen it was towards the end of Thor: Ragnarok.

While some thought that the yet to be revealed soul stone might be revealed in Black Panther, it seems that we’ll just have to wait for the film to be released to find out for ourselves. Based on the trailers for Infinity War, we know that we’ll be seeing the culmination of all this work that Marvel has done to build up to infinity war, I just hope that iall the build-up and hype will ultimately be worth it.

Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Benedict Wong, Tom Hiddleston, Benicio Del Toro, Danai Gurira and Josh Brolin. The film recently pushed up it’s release date, and now hits theaters on April 27, 2018. Here’s the official synopsis:

As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
