Box Office: ‘Pacific Rim’ Uprises ‘Black Panther’

After five weeks as king, Black Panther must pass the crown to the next film.  Pacific Rim Uprising has surpassed Panther as the number one film earning an estimated $28 million its opening weekend.  Pacific Rim 2 had a reported budget of more than $150 million, so the $28 million opening is not great.  The film will surely have legs overseas, as it’s already made $122 million in foreign markets.

Guillermo del Toro’s original Pacific Rim opened with $37 million here in the states.  Pacific Rim went on to finish with $101.8 million domestically, and a worldwide total of $411 million.  Expect similar but lower numbers for the sequel, which is cruising overseas.

Despite not finishing number one, Black Panther had officially become the largest grossing superhero film of all time.  Its domestic take of $630.9 million was enough to overtake The Avengers $623 million domestic box office haul.  Black Panther is far from done, however.  Expect the film to continue to make money the next few weeks as it adds to its now $1.2 billion international box office.  Black Panther is now the twelfth largest release of all-time.

I Can Only Imagine finished third with an estimated $13.8 million.  The film has now earned $38 million domestically after two-weeks since its release.

Tomb Raider rounds out the top five finishing right behind Gnomes with an estimated $10.4 million.  Tomb Raider has now earned a lousy $41 million domestically but currently sits at $211 million worldwide after ten days since its release.

And finally, finishing outside of the top five was Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs which brought in an estimated $1.5 million in just 27 theaters.  Isle of Dogs will expand its reach this week as it opens in more theaters across the country.

Here’s the top five weekend box office estimates:

Title Weekend Domestic Total Domestic
1. ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ $28 million $28,003,000
2. ’Black Panther’ $16.6 million $630,916,236
3. ‘I Can Only Imagine’ $13.8 million $38,316,986
4. ‘Sherlock Gnomes’ $10.6 million $10,600,000
5. ‘Tomb Raider’ $10.4 million $41,748,108
