Five weeks. That’s how long Black Panther has been king of the box office. In the current age of Blockbusters the trend is typically huge opening weekend, a 50% financial drop, two weeks at number one, before ultimately being overtaken by the next movie. But for a movie to open and remain the box office king for five weeks is almost unheard of. The last movie to accomplish that was 2009’s Avatar. Black Panther was released 31 days ago and after this weekends estimated $27 million added to its now massive $605.4 million domestic, the money continues to rise.
Tomb Raider finished second with an estimated $23.5 million. The latest video game adaptation failed to connect with critics and currently sits at 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, in a long line of failed video game adaptations, Tomb Raider has the chance to potentially break even. However, with a reported of over $90 plus million, it may be difficult to accomplish.
I Can Only Imagine continues a different trend – religious movies that surprise folks with their box office numbers. The film opened with $17 million, on a budget of only $7 million.
A Wrinkle in Time finished its second weekend in fourth with an estimated $16.5 million. The Ava DuVernay directed Disney movie has brought in an estimated $61 million domestically since its release. Rounding out the top-five is Love, Simon which earned an estimated $11.5 million.
