‘Bumblebee’ Unveils First Look At Decepticons

Paramount Pictures has released a new image form ‘Bumblebee‘ that gives us our first good look tat the deceptions from the first solo ‘Transformers’ spin-off film. While the first trailer for the film was mostly a coming of age story that happens to feature robots. Marking the live-action debut of director Travis Knight, the film centers around Hailee Steinfeld‘s Charlie as she navigates the cusp of adulthood when she discovers the titular character taking shelter in her garage. Set in 1987, bumblebee is hiding from two deception “trackers”.

According to EW–who also debuted the image–there will be three deception characters that are set to make their debut in the film. The first is Shatter–who takes the form of a red Plymouth Satellite–will be voiced by Angela Bassett. The second deception revealed in the image is Dropkick, a blue AMC Javelin that will be voiced by Justin Theroux. While these two characters are featured prominently in the image, it’s the third deception character that remains a mystery. While the first  trailer featured this character briefly (see image above), details are currently being kept under wraps. Here’s the aforementioned image:

According to Knight, the goal was to keep things “lean” in terms of how many characters in the story. Speaking with EW, the director had this to say about the film’s villains:
“The two main villains are Decepticon muscle cars. When the cast is too big, and you have a finite amount of time, there’s only so much you can do to create an investment in them. This is a more personal, intimate, and character-driven story, so it felt right to keep the villain plot relatively simple and contained. If you keep things lean, you can add a lot of other stuff on top of it that makes it more enjoyable.”
In addition to Steinfeild, Bassett, and Theroux, the film features John Cena, Pamela AdlonKenneth ChoiMegan Pryce, and Martin Short. Written by Christina Hodsonthe film is set for a December 21st, 2018 release. ‘Bumblebee’ is set to make an appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, so make sure to check back as more is revealed int he coming week. In the meantime, here’s official synopsis for the film:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.  When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
