New ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ Trailer Raises More Questions

10 Cloverfield Lane is a film that, as far as the general public was concerned, didn’t even exist when the year started. Operating under the usual Bad Robot “veil of secrecy”, the film used the working title ‘Valencia’ to keep things under wraps. Of course, when the first trailer dropped, everyone was surprised and intrigued to learn that the film’s real title was 10 Cloverfield Lane, a seeming sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield.

While Abrams and company have been very coy about the film, but the question is how close of a sequel this actually is. Here’s what we know so far: Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the film revolves a woman who wakes up in a bomb shelter with two other men who claim to have saved her. From what–we don’t exactly know. JJ Abrams has stated that the film is a “blood relative” the 2008 original, only leading to further speculation about how close of a sequel this actually is. The film stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr.

While the Super Bowl trailer for the film certainly provided a pulse-pounding look into the film, I feel that this trailer (and the marketing in general) are holding back on almost everything. This trailer does a good job of ratcheting up the tension, but I can’t help but think that the “Cloverfield” name is merely a marketing gimmick to attract people to a film that they otherwise wouldn’t see. Only time will tell, but in the meantime you can check out the new trailer below, which premiered during The Walking Dead mid-season premiere.

10 Cloverfield Lane hit theaters March 11th, 2016.
