Originally planned for a late 2013 release, Sony Pictures Classic and Annapurna have set a release date for their bizarre true-story Foxcatcher. Foxcatcher is directed by Bennett Miller, who’s only two films have earned Best Picture Nominations in Copote and Moneyball. This years Oscar race was extremely competitive, so it makes sense why the studio pushed back its release, as it now holds the Oscar-friendly November release date. The film stars Steve Carrell as the eccentric (to say the least) wrestling coach John du Pont and his relationship with champion wrestlers Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo).
The story is an especially strange but true tale, involving one of the wealthiest, most influential, and possibly corrupt families in the world. Miller’s track record is solid, and the studio seems to have high hopes for the film come award season. Don’t be surprised to hear “And the Oscar goes to… Steve Carrell.. Channing Tatum”, come awards season next year. The role looks to be a game changer for Carrell, who has already shown he has the dramatic acting chops to hold a film.
