Event Review: Wrestlemania 40 Night One

WrestleMania 40’s night one in Philadelphia was a spectacle of high-octane wrestling that lived up to the grandeur expected of such a storied event. The evening was headlined by a tag team match featuring Roman Reigns and The Rock against Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins, which delivered an electrifying performance, setting a dramatic tone for the rest Wrestlemania weekend! The stakes were incredibly high, with the outcome influencing the main event of night two, adding a layer of strategic depth to the match. Roman Reigns and The Rock took the win and if Cody Rhodes is going to “finish the story” he will be playing now by the Bloodline’s rules for night two!

The Bloodline’s presence was felt throughout the night, particularly in the emotionally charged match between estranged twin brothers Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso, which showcased a personal family drama unfolding in the ring. Jey Uso made his entrance with rapper Lil Wayne much to the crowds’ delight and the “Yeets” could be heard far and wide!  Jey Uso took the win via pinfall against his brother!

The Intercontinental Championship saw GUNTHER defending his title against Sami Zayn in a match that was as much a clash of styles as it was of personalities, providing a technical masterpiece that was a treat for wrestling purists.  We saw Sami Zayn take the win much to the crowd’s delight, as it was without a doubt well deserved.

Rhea Ripley’s defense of the Women’s World Championship against Becky Lynch was another highlight, with both competitors showing why they are at the pinnacle of women’s wrestling. Rhea entering the ring rocking with band Motionless In White was also a fantastic touch! Rhea Ripley won the match to retain the women’s world title.

The six-pack ladder match for the Undisputed Tag Team Championship was a chaotic yet thrilling affair, with teams like Judgment Day, #DIY, The New Day, R Truth and The Miz, Austin Theory and Greyson Waller, and New Catch Republic all vying for the coveted titles in a match that was a true testament to teamwork and resilience. It was a great moment to see R-Truth and The Miz come away with the win for the Raw title and Austin Theory and Greyson Waller took the titles for Smackdown!

The trio of Bianca Belair, Naomi, and Jade Cargill versus Damage CTRL provided a dynamic showcase of athleticism and charisma, further elevating the status of the women’s tag team scene. The debut of Jade Cargill at WrestleMania added fresh excitement, hinting at the future direction of the women’s division. Cargill, Belair and Naomi won the match looking like the true superstars!

At WrestleMania 40, a celebration of modern lucha libre unfolded with Rey Mysterio & Andrade facing off against Santos Escobar & Dominik Mysterio. The event showcased Rey’s aerial prowess, Andrade’s dynamic strikes, Escobar’s powerful grappling, and Dominik’s strategic maneuvers. In a pivotal moment, Escobar urged Dominik to resort to using a chair, but before he could act, he was confronted by two imposing masked figures, later revealed to be Philadelphia Eagles players Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson. Mysterio capitalized on the distraction, executing a double-619 followed by a top-rope splash on Escobar to secure the victory.

The event was not just about the matches, but also the overall experience. The production values were top-notch, with impressive pyrotechnics and lighting that enhanced the spectacle. The commentary team did an excellent job of narrating the unfolding drama, adding layers of storytelling to the matches. The crowd in Philadelphia was fully engaged, providing a raucous atmosphere that only added to the night’s excitement.
