Pop! Pop! Ep. 57 – Universal vs. AMC

Universal may have just messed up big time you guys… but we’ll get to that.  First up! Joel is ugly-crying as we speak because San Diego Comic-Con 2020 has officially been canceled due to Coronavirus.  While everyone knew this was coming, and it’s the safest thing to do, it doesn’t sting any less.  While almost every convention for the 2020 season has either postponed or canceled, Star Wars Celebration has yet to announce any plans.  We don’t see how the event can go on during times like these so it’s only a matter of time before we hear something from them.

Quarantine be damned, there’s actually a ton of movie news stuffed into this podcast!  Sony has named their incredibly stupid Spider-Man-less Spider-Man “universe” and holy crap it’s almost as stupid as the idea itself (can you tell who wrote this??)  Vin Diesel is lobbying to get that coveted “P.G.A.” title after his name and the producer’s guild doesn’t seem to want to play ball.  They better be careful or he’ll drive a sports car through their building.  With all of the uncertainty in Hollywood during the Coronavirus pandemic, we speculated how weird the 2021 Oscars could look, but the Academy recently stated that for this year only streaming films will be eligible to be nominated for next year’s ceremony.  Looks like Sonic won’t be getting a best picture nom after all… In the age where Disney is remaking all of their animated films into live-action blockbusters, the question is always “What’s next?”  Well, how about the Russo Brothers directing a live-action Hercules movie!? Does that excite you?

Following up last week’s main topic about AMC reportedly being in financial distress, this week they’ve seemingly gone to war with Universal now.  After the success of Universal’s Trolls: World Tour VOD success, speculation was made that Universal would shift to releasing their films on VOD the same day as the theatrical release.  AMC didn’t take kindly to that, stating that they would no longer screen Universal films in their theaters if that were the case.  Before almost anyone could take sides, Regal did, and stepped in to back AMC on this decision.  There are so many moving parts to this debacle, you’ll have to tune in to hear our breakdown and thoughts on who’s making the mistake here!
