Although the upcoming fantasy adventure film could have easily been a Pixar-ized version of The Smurfs, this trailer looks promising. It focuses heavily on the concept of the world, which looks to be an interesting take on the fantasy genre. Even though plot details are naturally sparse, it also provides a glimpse at the chemistry between the two leads. Luckily, Scanlon revealed the inspiration for the story to Slashfilm at 2017’s D23 Expo, which gives more insight into the film:
“When he was young, his father passed away. He saw photos and videos of him, but he and his younger brother never heard his voice until later on in their lives. When Scanlon was a teenager, he was sent a cassette tape by a family member featuring his father’s voice. All his father said on the recording was “bye,” but Scanlon said it felt like magic to him and his brother.”
While this is certainly vague, it does give valuable subtext about the direction that the story might take. Pixar is known for infusing massive amounts of heart and emotion into their stories, so this concept seems ripe for the dramatic picking. EIther way, Pixar looks to be back on track with their first original outing since their excellent 2017 film, Coco.

In addition to Pratt and Holland, the film also features the voice talents of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer. Onward opens in theaters everywhere on March 6, 2020. Below, you can find the official synopsis and poster for Onward. What are your thoughts on the first trailer for Pixar’s latest original film? Make sure to let us know in the comment section below!
