Weekend Watch: ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Edition

Welcome to Weekend Watch, where we highlight some of the best nerd-related videos released throughout the week. Whether it be short films, behind the scenes videos, or video essays, the only requirement is that they are about–in some shape or form–our favorite movies and TV shows!

In another special edition of of Weekend Watch, we take a look at all things ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp‘ to honor of the film’s release, including “auto-complete” interviews with the cast, a career retrospective as told by Michael Douglas, and a video that examines the real-life science behind the film. Plus, we also have a cool video that details the comic book history of the quantum realm (a.k.a. the micro verse), and a great scene breakdown from the film’s director Peyton Reed. Without further adieu, let’s jump right into it!

Starting off, we have yet another one of WIRED‘s “auto-complete” interviews, the cast of the film answer some of the web’s most burning questions. If you’ve ever wondered what Paul Rudd‘s first film was, or how Michael Douglas met real-life wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, then this interview is for you. Aside from the great chemistry that Evangeline Lilly and Rudd display here, it’s Hannah John-Karmen that seems to be having the most fun here.

Up next, we have a great video from Vanity Fair where Michael Douglas breaks down his illustrious 40+ year career. In the video, Douglas discusses his career timeline from early classics such as ‘Romancing the Stone‘, ‘Fatal Attraction‘, ‘Wall Street‘ and ‘Basic Instinct‘ to his modern roles with ‘Behind the Candelabra‘ and ‘Ant-Man‘. By far the most fascinating aspect of this video is learning that Douglas’ career was jumpstarted by his producing work on ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest‘.

Delving into extremely light spoiler territory, our next video from NBC News takes a look the real life science behind ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’, trying to determine if the film’s fictional science could actually be possible. Spyridon Michalakis, a quantum physicist and science adviser in the film explains how this fictional science is rooted in some cutting edge ideas that are a part of real-life physics. The MCU movies have always taken certain liberties with the pseudo-science in their films, but it’s good to know that there is attention paid to rooting these films in reality as much as possible.

This cool video from IGN offers a brief look at the history of the quantum realm from the comics and how it has mad it’s way into the MCU proper. The quantum realm, known as the microverse in the comics, has been around since the 1940’s but wasn’t fully taken advantage of until the 1960’s. The video also astutely notes that the quantum realm will have a major impact on the cinematic universe moving forward and will surely be crucial to both ‘Captain Marvel‘ and ‘Avengers 4′

Finally, in another edition of “notes on a scene”, also from Vanity Fair, director Peyton Reed breaks down the kitchen fight scene that takes place toward the end of the first act. What immediately stands out about the scene is all of the filming tools that were used to make the scene come to life. Using a blend of live-action, motion capture, and computer generated elements,  it’s impressive how many different techniques were used to bring the scene and Lilly’s Wasp to life.
