It’s official: ‘Doctor Strange 2‘ is happening! Even though just about everyone assumed this was going to happen at some point, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has confirmed in a recent interview that ‘Doctor Strange 2‘ might going into production sooner rather than later. Here’s what Feige had to say when speaking with CinemaBlend:
“Doctor Strange, you know, whenever we do another Strange one, which we will do, it will be a number of years from the first Strange, and yet he’s a very big part of [Avengers:] Infinity War. So it is just a good problem to have when you have too many beloved characters that people want to see more of, whilst keeping to our core belief that we need to keep exploring nuance and keep doing different types of things.”
Indeed, it seems Feige is adamant on getting a ‘Doctor Strange‘ sequel made, but it also raises questions about where the character was left in ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘. This all but confirms that Strange–along with a few other “dusted” characters–will indeed make their return in ‘Avengers 4‘. Regardless of this, it’s exciting to know that Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue to delve into the magical aspects of the franchise even further.
Feige’s comments imply that there is certainly an emphasis on telling more Strange stories in the near future, with potential release dates in 2020 or 2021. Although a date for the film hasn’t officially been announced, it’s safe to say that ‘Doctor Strange 2‘ will most likely happen in phase 4. As of right now, 2016’s ‘Doctor Strange‘ is the only standalone MCU entry besides ‘The Incredible Hulk‘ that hs yet to receive a sequel. It’s unclear if director Scott Derrickson will return or who will even write the sequel, but Benedict Cumberbatch is sure to return as the sorcerer supreme. It’s hard to speculate on which course ‘Doctor Strange 2‘ will take until we learn the fate of Cumberbatch’s Strange in ‘Avengers 4‘.
