20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for ‘Bad Times at the El Royale‘, and it looks to trippy as hell. Written and directed by Drew Goddard, the film serves as the follow-up to the prolific writer’s directorial debut with the superb ‘Cabin in the Woods‘. The plot follows a group of strangers who meet at a weird hotel that straddles the line between California and Nevada called the El Royale. When it’s revealed that these guests are not who they say they are, things spin out of control into what this trailer presents as pure and complete madness.
Based on this first trailer for the film, this looks to be one of the most promising films set for release this year. The visual aesthetic is vibrant both in therms of production design, as well as lighting itself. It’s so great to see a filmmaker as talented as Goddard embrace such wacky design choices, and it also helps to create a unique world within the film. As a person who loved the genre-bending aspects of ‘Cabin in the Woods‘, it’s exciting to see Goddard take that same mentality into murder-mystery genre.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this film is the surprisingly superb cast that Goddard has managed to put together here. Starring Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm, Cailee Spaeny, Lewis Pullman, Nick Offerman and Chris Hemsworth, Goddard has managed to piece together an eclectic cast of character actors for what seems to be a great little ensemble piece. I don’t know about you, but i’ll be in the theater when ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ opens on October 5th, 2018. In the meantime, here’s the official trailer for ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’, along with the first synopsis and images from the film:
