Box Office: ‘Black Panther’ Tops Second Weekend with Over $100 Million

Black Panther continues its amazing box office run earning $108 million in its second week of release.  The film has now grossed over $400 million domestically, and is only the fourth movie to earn more than $100 million in its second frame.  The only film to have a bigger second weekend was Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $149.2 million back in 2015.  For comparisons sake, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has the 200th best second weekend of-all-time with $27.6 million.

Nevertheless, Black Panther delivered a huge weekend, and now sits over $700 million globally.  It will be interesting to see how Avengers: Infinity War fairs in comparison with the massive numbers being put up by Black Panther.  The last Avengers film Age of Ultron earned $459 million domestically, expect Black Panther to top that by next weekend. You can read our review of Black Panther here.

The new R-rated comedy Game Night finished second with an estimated $16.6 million.  The Rachel McAdams/Jason Bateman comedy is a fun ride for those having seen Black Panther.  Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein have their next film lined up with DC’s Flashpoint.  More news I’m sure will come soon on that project.

Peter Rabbit finished third with $12.5 million.  In its almost three weeks of release, the film has grossed $74 million.

The best sci-fi film in some time Annihilation opened fourth with $11 million.  The film is director Alex Garland‘s follow up to the beyond excellent Ex Machina.  The film has great performances and asks interesting questions.  It’s also very entertaining in a popcorn way.  With a production budget of $40 million, it will be interesting to see how this film does.  This type of movie is becoming almost extinct in the theaters, and even this movie was sold to Netflix to stream internationally 17 days after its initial release.
