Weekend Watch: History of ‘Black Panther’; P.T. Anderson; ‘Bright’ Featurette; & More

Welcome to Weekend Watch, where we highlight some of the best nerd-related videos released throughout the week. Whether it be short films, behind the scenes videos, video essays, the only requirement is that they are about–in some shape of form–our favorite movies and TV shows!

In this edition of Weekend Watch, we have a nifty video on the history of ‘Black Panther‘, a really cool video of P.T. Anderson on set as a P.A. in 1992, and a great featurette on the creation of the world in Netflix’s ‘Bright‘. Plus, we have an in-depth video essay on Steven Spielberg‘s use of sound design, along with a fun video that showcases Tommy Wiseau talking about his experience at this year’s Golden Globes.

Jumping right in, we have a video essay that explains the comic book origins of T’Challa, as well as giving a great summary on the source of the Wakandan King’s powers. Although this video on the history of ‘Black Panther‘ was originally released by Variant Comics to coincide with the release of ‘Captain America: Civil War‘, it serves as a great primer for the upcoming Marvel Studios film if you don’t know much about the character going in.

In a recent Reddit AMA to promote the release of ‘Phantom Thread‘, writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson addressed the subject of a seemingly rare video 1992 featuring the director interviewing crew members of a movie that he was working as a production assistant on. The movie in question is the Robert Conrad film ‘Sworn to Vengeance, asking various departments of the crew about their work, and which one they think is the most important. Fascinating watch.

Up next, we have a featurette on creating the world of Netflix’s ‘Bright’. The featurette, which is led by director David Ayer, explores and overall design and “look” of the film, along with how the ‘Suicide Squad‘ helmer brought all of these elements together to create a fascinating, gritty look for the streaming service’s first big-budget film.

This cool video essay from Nerdwriter explores the way that Steven Spielberg uses sound design in his films. Although the prolific director is currently making the awards rounds for ‘The Post‘, this video looks at 2005’s ‘Munich‘. It’s easy to forget how Spielberg is a master of his craft, and this is just one of the many reasons why the director remains one of the greatest of all time.

Finally, we have a local Los Angeles news interview that was done with Tommy Wiseau about his experience at this year’s Golden Globes. You may or may not know that James Franco brought ‘The Room‘ filmmaker up on stage during his speech, after winning the best actor trophy for ‘The Disaster Artist‘, only to pull him back from the microphone before he could speak during the acceptance speech. In the interview, Tommy tells us what he would have said to the audience if Franco would have let him speak. Suffice to say, it’s the most Tommy-esque response ever.
