‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ is a force to be reckoned with. The film was able to top all new wide releases this weekend, and remain number one at the box office. This marks three weeks at the top for the Jake Kasdan-directed sequel to the 1995 original hit. While January isn’t the time of year that lights the box office on fire, what Jumanji has done impressive nonetheless. Jumanji has crossed the $300 million domestic mark, currently sitting at around $315 million domestically. It’s worldwide total is currently $767.8 million.
Jumanji held off newcomers ‘12 Strong’ (which opened with an estimated $16.5 million) and ‘Den of Thieves’ (with an estimated $15.3 million), which finished second and third respectively this weekend. Steven Spielberg’s uninspired ‘The Post‘ finished fourth with an estimated $12 million, which brings its domestic total to just over $45 million. With a reported budget of $50 million, the film has potential to turn a profit, but its looking like another bust for FOX- who produced the film. The Hugh Jackman led ‘The Greatest Showman’ rounds out our top five, finished with an estimated $11 million, for a worldwide haul of just over $230 million. Not too bad. Not too bad at all.
Looking outside of the top five, the new Paul Thomas Anderson film ‘Phantom Thread’ finished with an estimated $3.37 million after expanding into 896 theaters. It will be interesting to how Jumanji does with the new box office competitors Hostiles (which expands to 3,00 theaters) and ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’. Does Jumanji have what its takes to maintain box office? Check back next week to find out!
