Weekend Watch: ‘Baby Driver’ Sound Design, Rodger Deakins Oscar Snubs, ‘Dunkirk’ & More

Welcome to Weekend Watch, where we highlight some of the best nerd-related videos released throughout the week. Whether it be short films, behind the scenes videos, video essays, the only requirement is that they are about–in some shape of form–our favorite movies and TV shows!

In this edition of Weekend Watch, we take a look at the intricate sound design of ‘Baby Driver‘, a saddening video chronicling all of the times that Rodger Deakins has lost at the Oscars, and an in-depth video essay on how Christopher Nolan uses scale to make ‘Dunkirk‘ so successful. Plus, we take a look at a video of Tom Cruise detailing his ‘Mission: Impossible Fallout‘ injury, along with this year’s nearly hour-long THR Actor’s Roundtable that highlights some of this year’s awards contenders including Tom Hanks and Gary Oldman, among others.

Starting off, we have we have an awesome video essay that showcases the Oscar-nominated sound design of Edgar Wright‘s ‘Baby Driver‘. In the video (via Indiewire), sound designer Julian Slater details how he created sound design that would feel woven into the film’s soundtrack. It’s a really great tutorial on how Slater and co. crafted the sound design for the film, along with serving as a reminder of how important to any particular film sound is, but especially with something like ‘Baby Driver‘.

Next, we have a very depressing video that showcases all of the times that legendary cinematographer Rodger Deakins has been nominated, and subsequently lost for the best cinematography statuette. With such modern classics such as ‘No Country for Old Men‘ and ‘The Shawshank Redemption‘, among many, many others. This video (created by TIFF Originals ), serves as both a history lesson and a reminder of Deakins’ dense body of work in the past 20 years. Honestly, it’s kind of a shame that one of the greatest cinematographers of all-time has never won the industry’s top prize, but it may be Deakins’ year with his nomination for ‘Blade Runner 2049‘ this year.

This really great video essay from The Closer Look on how Christopher Nolan‘s ‘Dunkirk‘ is different form traditional war movies. The video, titled “The Art of Fear”, details how Nolan’s subjective approach of infusing such an epic scope makes the film so different from other WWII stories. The video essay details how each perspective helps to craft the feel of the film, along with going into more detail about why this approach works so well.

In the next video, watch as Tom Cruise details his injury last year on the set of ‘Mission: Impossible Fallout‘ on a recent episode of the Graham Norton Show (via EW). If you’re squeamish, you may just want to skip this video, although it’s not completely grotesque either. While the video does focus on the injury itself, it also gives our first good look at some footage from the film. The film is still shooting, but I’m sure that we’ll see more very soon.

Finally, we leave off with this year’s annual THR Actor’s Roundtable in it’s entirety. At a little overr long, this year’s roundtable features Tom Hanks (‘The Post’), James Franco (‘The Disaster Artist’), Gary Oldman (‘Darkest Hour’), John Boyega (‘Detroit’), Sam Rockwell (‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri’), and Willem Dafoe (‘The Florida Project’). The chat covers a variety of subjects, as well as offering some insight into each participant’s creative process.
