J.J. Abrams Has a Script for ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’, Shoots This Summer

For once, director J.J. Abrams actually has a script in hand for a project that he’s about to shoot. Abrams recently appeared on ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert‘ to confirm that not only does he have a script for the as of yet untitled ‘Star Wars: Episode IX‘, but also that the film will commence principal photography this summer. Notorious for entering production with in-progress scripts such as he did with ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘, it seems that Abrams is thrilled to have a different experience this time around.

Despite this, the questions still remain about how much of Colin Tevorrow’s abandoned script will have made it through to this draft. With all of the infighting between fans about ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘ along with the justified skepticism of the upcoming ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story‘, ‘Star Wars: Episode IX‘ should serve as a breath of fresh air to the franchise in what will hopefully be the final entry into the Skywalker saga for awhile. And to be honest, this little bit of news is refreshing, not because it’s groundbreaking, but because Abrams seems to be excited to to be back telling a (hopefully) different story this time.

In case you missed it, or just don’t feel like watching the full interview, here’s what Abrams had to say about the status of ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’:
“We have a script, which is a big deal for me. It starts shooting end of July … Sometimes having the script in advance is something I haven’t always been lucky enough to have … But I’m writing this with Chris Terrio, who’s a genius, and I’m having a great time.”
Indeed, the script was written Abrams and Chris Terrio, and we can surely expect Daisy RidleyJohn BoyegaAdam DriverOscar Isaac to return at the very least. The film is currently set for a December 20, 2019 release, after being pushed back roughly six months late last year. Either way, we’ll have the upcoming ‘Solo‘ to tide us over in a few months. Make sure to check back as ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ begins filming later this summer.
