Infographic: DC vs. Marvel – Universal Battle For the Box Office

The battle between universes has just been lit up as we see a number of both Marvel and DC movies blasting through the roof. If we consider that many stories from comic books are still untold, how many movies are yet to come? With a well-established culture based on comic books and millions of fans worldwide, the popularity of superheroes finds its way to every pore of society. Since the “superhero movie era” began in the early 2000’s, 5 movies found their places in top 20 grossing movies list of all time, which is remarkable.

So where did all this come from? Marvel and DC universe battle goes on way before the first movies were ever made. In the beginning, there were comic books which are considered as the bible for Marvel and DC “religion”. Later, as technology started taking the impact on cinematography, comic books were accompanied by many tv shows and movies. And movies, according to data, turned out to be the most profitable way of a new era.

What exactly has changed in the last century though? It would be terribly wrong to say that comic-book based screen adaptations began with the new millennium, but the fact is that until that time Hollywood had very little to offer to their fans in terms of CGI. I mean, have you seen the variety of characters in ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ or ‘Guardians of Galaxy? And not to mention the scenes. You can say that CGI is more adaptable to the human imagination than ever.

But now, things are changing. So far, we were able to see two Avengers movies, a brilliant Nolan’s Batman trilogy and who knows how many ‘Superman’ or ‘Spider-Man movies? Some of them managed to pull out the best and made pieces worthy of their demanding audience, and others have failed completely by totally missing the target by a mile.

However, this also begs the question: Who will take over the top next? Future of this genre holds many excitements. With new heroes being introduced like in ‘Black Panther or ‘Aquaman stepping on a big scene for the first time, and expected sequels of ‘The Avengers, ‘Deadpool‘or ‘Spider-man, fans really have nothing to worry about. And movies, except for their entertaining the audience part, will do their best to surpass the gigantic income of $623 million achieved by the first Avengers movie and snatch their “belt” for a while.

This infographic (via SeatUp) chronologically shows 20 highest grossing movies that came from either Marvel Cinematic Universe or DC Extended Universe since the beginning of the new century. As well as Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB ratings, the infographic reveals plenty of interesting information such as total budget spent on each movie, number of theaters that were showing each of them, MPAA ratings and major studios that made each project happen.
