It’s Official; Russo Brothers Directing ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Having only been speculation for the past few months, it’s now officially confirmed- Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) will direct the third Avengers film titled Avengers: Infinity War Part I and II.  They will move on to the Infinity War movies after Captain America: Civil War, which begins filming in a couple weeks.

russo-brosSo who are the Russo brothers?  Before The Winter Soldier, they were best known for their comedy directing, directing many episodes of Arrested Development– including the pilot.  They also directed episodes of Community, Up All Night, Happy Ending, among many others.  As far as their big-screen features, they directed 2002’s underrated Welcome to Collinwood and 2006’s You, Me and Dupree.  The talented brothers had primarily worked on comedies, that is until last years Captain America sequel.  Many can argue that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the best Marvel film to date, so the studio has a ton of confidence in the brothers ability to direct big-budget action films (and rightfully so).

Avengers: Infinity War will be broken into two parts- with Part I arriving in 2018 and Part II hitting theaters in 2019.  The films will shoot back-to-back in 2016 and 2017 respectively, so the Russo brothers will be spending the next five years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  As far as the script goes, no writer has been attached to Infinity War as of yet (that will no doubt change soon).

I can’t think of anyone else I would want taking over for Joss Whedon who wants to move on to more personal projects.  Whedon did an amazing job setting up this universe and has earned the right to do other passion projects.  It’s exciting news that the MCU will be in good hands.
