Joseph Kahn’s “Bootleg” film ‘POWER/RANGERS’ under attack by Saban; Kahn Responds on Twitter

In case you haven’t heard, a new short film titled ‘POWER/RANGERS’ was premiered today by Hitfix.com, and it is making waves throughout the internet fanboy community, accruing over 1.5 million views in less than 24 hours. Upon hearing of the success of the short film, which was produced by ‘Dirty Laundry‘ and ‘Truth in Journalism‘ Producer Adi Shankar, copyright holder Saban went on the attack, demanding that the film be taken down. While the rights themselves are indeed held by Saban, the director of the short, Joseph Kahn — who you might remember directed the cult film Torque –– rallied on twitter arguing that his film is like any other fan film on the internet. Hit the Jump for the film (while it lasts), as well as Kahn’s full comments.

Here are Kahn’s comments, via his twitter account:

While I don’t think that Saban has anything to worry about since a film like this wold never be feasible to make on a business level, it is kind of fun to see a different take on a property that has never been done before. Just like most fan films you, can tell through the product is wholly original and as Kahn points out, uses no existing material from the franchise, so I honestly can’t see what the big fuss is.

Overall Power/Rangers is another awesome addition to the Adi Shankar “bootleg universe”. Personally I can’t wait to see what the fan-favorite producer comes up with next.
