Jumanji: The Next Level Trailer Introduces A New Twist To The Game

Sony Pictures Entertainment has revealed the first trailer for Jumanji: The Next Level, which is the highly anticipated sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The latter garnered a massive box office haul to the tune of $962 Million, and a sequel was immediately greenlit. Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Kevin Heart all make a return, with director Jake Kasdan also returning to the helm. Joining the cast this time around are Danny DeVito and Danny Glover as two cantankerous old-timers who are caught up in the shenanigans. Now, the first trailer for Jumanji: The Next Level has revealed the follow-up, which doubles down on the wackiness of the reboot in an unexpected way. Check out the first trailer below!

As you can see, Jumanji: The Next Level also sees the return of Ser’Darius BlainAlex WolffMadison Iseman, and Morgan Turner as the teenage characters. But once they enter the game, however, things play out a bit differently. Whereas Johnson was portraying a shy teenager with no confidence, he’s basically doing a Danny Devito impression here. While this novelty might have legs, it’s also a tricky prospect since DeVito’s persona is so distinctive and specific. Similarly, Hart is doing a Glover impression, which could also get repetitive quickly. Although Turner’s Martha still inhabits Ruby Roundhouse, Blain’s “Fridge” is now controlling Black’s character.

Welcome to the Jungle was a big surprise in terms of how good it was. So it seems that the sequel is trying to emulate that formula by once again shaking things up. The concept of different personalities being able to inhabit the game’s avatars seems to be a fruitful choice for the film. And despite my hesitance on some of these choices, Jumanji: The Next Level looks like loads of fun. It’s tough to judge since the trailer doesn’t give us a true sense of the story. Time will tell since we only have a little over seven months until the film’s release.

In addition to Kasdan’s return to the director’s chair, the film is written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. It also features the acting talents of Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Nick Jonas, Colin Hanks, and Rhys Darby. The film opens in theaters on December 13, 2019.
