After Ben Affleck‘s departure from the lead role in The Batman, many fans were left wondering who might take over. After much speculation, we might finally have our answer. According to Variety, Robert Pattinson is the top choice for the role in the upcoming reboot. But will Pattinson be slipping into the cape and cowl? Robert Pattinson Is The Frontrunner To Play Batman
The last incarnation of Dark Knight fell into some sad circumstances with Justice League. While the DC Comics universe was turned upside-down after the release of that film, The Batman looks to change that. Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman is currently scheduled for release in 2021. Originally, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jon Hamm, Armie Hammer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Nicholas Hoult were rumored for the role at various points. But if Variety’s report is to be believed, it seems that Pattinson is indeed the top pick to play Batman.
While Robert Pattinson is certainly a divisive choice to play the titular character in The Batman, nothing is set in stone. As THR points out, a deal has yet to be made, let alone an official offer. Although a contract has yet to be signed, the 33-year-old actor could still have other competition. According to Deadline, Hoult is also in on the shortlist for the role.
Even though it seems that Warner Brothers is interested in both actors, Pattinson apparently holds a slight edge. In any case, a new actor will play a younger Batman than the one played by Affleck and Christian Bale. Matt Reeves recently indicated that The Batman‘s story would not cover Year One of Bruce Wayne’s journey. This all but confirms rumors that this won’t be another “origin story”.
Backlash & Fan Casting
Since Pattinson was rumored, the idea of the Twilight actor in the role has been contentious at best. Many Batman fans were angered at the thought of Pattinson playing the part, with many even going as far as to sign a petition against the casting. However, others came to Pattinson’s defense saying he cannot be blamed for just how “bad” the Twilight films were and he, himself, is actually a very talented actor.
Regardless, this hasn’t stopped the internet from making the inevitable connection to his most famous role. Apparently, some fans of the Twilight film saga are still “shipping” Pattinson and his co-star Kirsten Stewart. Now, it seems that they are clamoring for the actress to be in the running to play Catwoman alongside Pattinson’s Batman. The pair have not appeared on-screen together since the Twilight film franchise came to an end. Regardless, some Twilight fans want to see them back together once again. Certain fans also pointed out that Kristen Stewart has been wanting to act in a superhero film for quite some time now. So this would be her perfect opportunity, especially with Charlie’s Angels on the horizon. Somehow, we definitely do not see this happening, but nowadays you never know!
