Dear Mr. Steven Spielberg. What’s Up Bro ?

It was recently reported that legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg is using his influence against live streaming services like Netflix so they will not have the ability to have their content eligible to receive awards at the Oscars. I have a lot of respect for Mr. Spielberg, but in my opinion, he’s dead wrong.

In his forty-year plus career the film director has made some of the most memorable films like “ Jaws” and “E.T.” and produced some of the most phenomenal pop culture films such as “Back to the Future” and “Jurassic Park”. For such a visual and futuristic director, he fails to see that the future is here, and it is here to stay. Streaming services are the wave of the future and they will only continue to keep growing.

Netflix, Hulu, Shudder, and any other streaming service has every right under the sun to get awards at the Oscars if the content is good enough and the audience is behind it. It’s kind of funny that all this is coming from a director that probably has a movie theater in his house. Economics and technology have leveled the playing field and left the golden age of Hollywood in the dust.

These days movie tickets are expensive. If you take a date to the movies and buy some snacks you are looking to spend upwards of about $50. Live streaming services like Netflix are a way cheaper alternative than having to go to a movie theater. People don’t have the funds or disposable income to head into a darkened theater and watch a movie. I wish it wasn’t this way, but that’s just the way it is.

Maybe if that golden age of Hollywood that you hold onto with all your might would come up with an original idea, then I could see your argument. Netflix offers comedians, actors, actresses, writers, and directors a chance for their content to be viewed by millions of people. You have no right to say who or what can receive awards.  Especially, when you yourself haven’t written down an original idea on a piece of paper in years. Do you shop at the same place that Sean Penn buys his chapstick to give Bradley Cooper all those kisses? Do you use said chapstick to give all your Oscars a kiss goodnight ? Give people the opportunity to get the awards and the applause they deserve good sir, that is all I’m saying.

From one Stephen to another Steven, I challenge you to sit down and think about what you’re trying to do. You are taking away opportunities for a lot of hardworking people. And maybe if you have the time sit down and write an idea and hell maybe Netflix will make it.
