New ‘Aladdin’ Trailer and Image Reveal Will Smith’s Genie

After much fanfaire and speculation, Disney has finally unveiled our first look at Will Smith’s genie in the highly anticipated remake of Aladdin. Although we got the first official teaser trailer for the film dropped a few months ago, it was a bit of a letdown, offering very little actual footage from the movie itself. Morever, the trailer was decidedly genie-less, leaving a big question mark around the live action version of the movie’s most memorable character.

Now, a new tv spot for Aladdin has finally arrived, offering our first good look at Will Smith in all of his computer generated glory. And boy- is it a sight to behold. Check out the new TV spot below, which premiered during the Grammys earlier tonight.

First off, we get our first good look at Jafar and Aladdin outside the cave of wonders, something that was heavily teased in the last trailer. After a few quick shots of some memorable moments that have been faithfully recreated, we also get a quick look at the magic carpet in the background after Aladdin ribs the lamp. Then there’s the big reveal, which is a bit underwhelming to say the least.

Aside from the odd choice for the only dialogue in the film, the effects look… shoddy at best. Considering the effects-heavy nature of a character like Genie, this isn’t a good sign for a movie that’s due out in just over three months. However, there’s still time to work on the effects, so we’ll just have to wait for a full trailer to make a better judgement. Interestingly, a new image of Smith in the full Genie getup was also released, which is honestly more impressive than the footage itself. You can find that image below.
