A Look Back at 2018s “Mandy”, A Bloody Goodtime

The year 2018 is coming to a fast close. This past year had a lot to offer in both pop culture and entertainment. One of the best films I have seen this year was Mandy. The movie will have a cult following for years to come. It was bloody and full of visuals that are both haunting and beautiful.

I first heard about the film when I had the opportunity to sit down with Legion M at this past years SDCC. You can find that interview here. https://www.ageofthenerd.com/2018/08/legion-m-shakes-sdcc/.   Legion M was one of the financial backers for the film and allows fans to invest in its projects.

Mandy stars Nicolas Cage in a grueling performance that would give John Wick a run for his money. Cage plays Red a man deeply in love with Mandy played elegantly by Andrea Riseborough. When Mandy is kidnapped by a trippy hippie cult, Red goes on a bloody rampage and hunts down the cult. Red’s revenge is bloody and grueling.

One of my favorites scenes in the film was when Red comes to the realization that his beloved is gone, and drinks a bottle of what appears to be Vodka and screams out in agony. As a viewer, I literally felt his emotion, and that is one of the things that makes this film work, because it’s emotional and primal.

The film is trippy in the way it was shot and the added in animation. The actors in the cult do an amazing job playing crazy and trippy to counterbalance off of Red’s revenge. The film was written and directed by Panos Cosmatos and runs 2hrs. If you’re a fan of trippy cult movies mixed with lots of blood and revenge, this film is for you.

Mandy is now streaming on Shudder and available to rent or own.
