Joss Whedon Steps Away From ‘Batgirl’ Film

Joss Whedon who has had a big hand in the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has reportedly left the Warner Bros and DC Batgirl film as writer and director. Whedon’s departure is said to be due to story issues. Speaking with THR, Whedon released claimed that he simply “didn’t have a story,” after nearly a year of working on the screenplay. Here’s Whedon’s full comment:

[quote]“Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story. I’m grateful to [DC president] Geoff [Johns] and [Warner Bros. Picture Group President] Toby [Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I… uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?”[/quote]

Based on Whedon’s comments, the departure was mutual between Whedon and Warner Bros/DC. There are rumors that the studio is looking for a female director to take charge of the film that obviously features a female lead.

Whedon’s departure adds to the long list of directors that have left future DC projects. Whedon signed onto the Batgirl project last March and later took over directorial duties on Justice League after Zack Snyder left the project due to a family tragedy. It has since been rumored that Snyder was really fired from the Justice League film.

It’s not known if the studio will proceed with the project or scrap it for the time being, but a recent report suggests that WB is still moving forward with the film. Which writer or director would you like to see take over the Batgirl film?
