Joe Russo Says ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ & ‘Avengers 4’ Will Be “Two Singular Expressions”

Since it’s announcement, we’ve always known that Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War was intended to be a two-part culmination of everything we’ve known into the MCU up to this point. Originally given the moniker of “Parts 1&2,” Marvel then decided to backtrack on that idea, with the first of the two films retaining the title of Avengers: Infinity War, and the second being simply titled Untitled Avengers 4. According to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Marvel has yet to reveal the title of the fourth Avengers film, simply because the title itself is apparently a spoiler for the ending of Infinity War.

We haven’t heard much about Avengers 4 at this point, which makes sense considering all of the attention on Infinity War with it’s release date looming. When speaking with a group of journalists on the set of Avengers: Infinity War last year, Joe Russo confirmed that the films still remain a two-parter, just not a traditionally as in the past. Along with this he gave some details about how the film will end up connecting, and his answer is rather surprising:
“Our approach has always been … we look at the process, as with [co-writers Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely, it’s simply the same thing in the way that the Winter Soldier relates to Civil War, and the way that Civil War relates to Infinity War. These two [Avengers] movies will also relate. There’s a narrative thread that is connecting these films, but at the same time, there’s an independence in terms of what the experience is, or where the story goes. It isn’t a true two-parter. And I think the two-parter concept came back when Marvel decided they were going to culminate the MCU. It was going to be a two-movie deal. But as we developed the movie, in execution, it ended up being more of two singular expressions. And I think that’s just what happened.”
I have to say that I really love this idea of treating each m movie as it’s own thing, especially since it seems that audiences like their stories contained to one film, and tend to respond poorly to two-parters.

Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Benedict Wong, Tom Hiddleston, Benicio Del Toro, Danai Gurira and Josh Brolin. The film recently pushed up it’s release date, and now hits theaters on April 27, 2018. Here’s the official synopsis:

As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
