Chris Hemsworth’s Contract is Over After ‘Avengers 4’ – Will Thor Survive?

I think that it’s pretty clear now that ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ and ‘Avengers 4‘ are going to change the Marvel Cinematic Unverse in a major way. Now that principle photography is nearing a close on the currently shooting ‘Avengers 4’, little tidbits of information have begun to be revealed. Although ‘Infinity War‘ is only a few months away, we don’t know really anything about ‘Avengers 4‘ except for the fact that some of these characters will not survive that film. Last week, we saw some interesting set photos that showed Captain America donning his old stars-and-stripes look from the first ‘Avengers‘ film, but it also begs the question–who will be killed off in the film(s)? It’s really tough to say at this point, but fans might want to prepare themselves for the end of Thor in one coming films.

According to Chris Hemsworth, who recently spoke in an interview with USA Today, said that ‘Avengers 4’ would be his last turn and the god of thunder–for now.

“Contractually, right now — yeah, this is it. I’m done. I won’t be playing the character again. It’s sort of a scary thought. This really seemed like this never-ending thing. And now it’s potentially finishing.”

The key word here are that Hemsworth could be “potentially” finishing his turn as the character. Although this neither conforms nor denies whether Thor survives the end of ‘Avengers 4‘, it’s certainly also a sign that his life could potentially hang in the balance. The end of Hemsworth’s contract doesn’t mean that the actor can’t come back eventually, as marvel has re-signed people like Robert Downey Jr. after their initial contracts have expired. But as it stands now, Hemsworth has officially ended his run as Thor, barring re-shoots or some kind or contract extension we don’t know about.

When asked where he would want to see the character go if he were to continue, Hemsworth revealed that he and ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ director Taika Waititi have had loose discussions.

“We gave cheers [to Thor: Ragnarok] a few times. But it also was like, ‘What could we do with four? We could do this and this.’ We were throwing ideas around. I felt like we re-invented him. There is a bigger platform now to continue if we want to.”

Although this seems like a purely hypothetical question at this point, it would be interesting to see where the duo would take the character after the success of ‘Ragnarok‘. Right now, however, it seems too early to make that determination, according to Hemsworth.

“[Feige] said, ‘Look, we just have to concentrate on (Avengers) now.’ So who knows? There are 76 cast members in these two Avengers films. They will be the biggest films of all time, far bigger than my character. It’s a conversation for further down the road, if it was going to happen.”

So as it stands right now, it seems like there’s a high probability that Thor might actually bite the dust in ‘Avengers 4’. There won’t be any way to really know until we watch the film when it’s released May 3, 2019. In the meantime, you can watch the trailer for ‘Infinity Warhere.
