As we gear up for this Sunday’s season three finale of AMC’s “Preacher” we are taking a look back at our chat with the cast and crew of the series that took place at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Series stars stars Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, and Joseph Gilgun, along with executive producer/showrunner Sam Catlin and executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg definitely gave us quite a bit of insight about the overall oddness that encompassed this season, as well as, shedding some light on what is to come in the future.
In the season finale we will see Jesse take on Marie ‘Gran’ma’ L’Angelle (Betty Buckley) – who has sided with Satan (Jason Douglas) – to get her back for years of abuse, but first he’ll have to battle her henchmen Jody (Jeremy Childs), who killed Jesse’s father, and TC (Colin Cunningham).
Elsewhere, Cassidy has to save the Children of Blood – and himself – from Eccarius (Adam Croasdell), while Tulip tries to keep herself and Eugene (Ian Colletti) out of Hell after their bus was ambushed by Nazis in the penultimate episode. Also, The Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish) and The Angel of Death (Erinn Ruth) will face off against Hitler (Noah Taylor), so there’s that too! It is definitely going to be a nail-biter.
When speaking about why they decided to bring in John Wayne, showrunner Sam Catlin told us, “At a certain point we weren’t going to do John Wayne at all.” Executive producer Seth Rogen then added, “that since the first season had so much weird stuff in it, that adding Wayne as an imaginary friend might be too much!” The season is definitely going to be insane and Catlin adds, “This season there’s more directly from the comics than the first two seasons”, which is music to the ears of hardcore fans of the “Preacher” comic book universe.
When speaking about her experience on the show actress Ruth Negga revealed, “I’ve very much enjoyed this season. I feel like Tulip has really come into her own. She’s finding her own way, and solidified her sense of who she is. She’s become like her own kind of superhero!”
We have learned over the course of the seasons that the group in not the nice tightly knit trio that they once were when they were in search of God in seasons one and two. Tulip made it very clear to Cassidy that her heart belongs to Jesse, however she does care for Cassidy as part of her created family. Jesse has pushed away both Tulip and Cassidy in an effort to protect them from the dangers of his family, and particularly Madame Marie L’Angelle, his bayou-dwelling, spell-casting grandmother.
Dominic Cooper comments, “At the time he’s made a decision he feels very bad about. He’s having to push them away from him in order to save them.” Cooper went on to say they will get back together, “but it gets worse before it gets better.”
When speaking about the same subject, actor Joseph Gilgun says, “I got depressed last season. I’ve got bipolar and it was a tough year. It’s not to say I wasn’t having a good time, too. There were moments in my career when I’ve had that and I feel I’ve forgotten how to act. It’s terrifying!”
When it happened during season 2, Gilgun said he asked his show family, the creators and cast, for their feedback and support. In turn, he said he feels a responsibility to talk about his illness to help others.
“I do want to be honest as I can be about the mental health,” he said. “I’m in a good place this year. My chemicals are balanced. I’m exercising, doing all that (stuff). Eating sushi all the time, I’m actually sick of it.”
While many fans complained that the story had strayed a bit from the original comic book source material in the first two seasons, the creators definitely had their reasons for doing so, as they told us they felt the need to flesh out the characters and scenarios a bit more, as the comic books blew through them all at such a rapid pace.
Now that they have established a lot of those details, Evan Goldberg says that they now feel more comfortable making their way back to the original source material. This also led to some comments about Cassidy keeping those trade-mark sunglasses.
“Only (jerks) wear sunglasses indoors,” Gilgun said. “I’m saying there’s no reason to wear shades indoors.”
“He’d look like a gangster,” Goldberg said.
“Or Bono,” Negga added.
“We went to Bono first,” Rogen joked.
“I’m a poor man’s Bono,” Gilgun moaned.
