‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season Two Is Brutal, Yet Brilliant

If you thought for even one moment that the Hulu Original Series The Handmaid’s Tale couldn’t get any more raw and brutal after season one then just wait till you get a load of season two! The show is a a true perspective about just want it would be like to live in someone else’s nightmare for an hour each week.

The tragedy and the pain that these women, forced citizens of the fictitious Gilead, are forced to endure is absolutely brutal and our first hand look through the eyes of our protagonist June is often time hard to even stomach. What was enjoyable at season two is that we got to see some further development of several other characters in the series, as well as, the true hell on earth that is the radioactive fallout in The Colonies shown through the eyes of Emily and her plight for survival.

The Colonies were only something that was threatened by Aunt Lydia throughout season one, but actually seeing them and they way the women prisoners are treated was just horrific. We also see some major changes in Serena’s character, as well as, her relationship with her husband the Commander Fred Waterford.

As brutal as The Handmaid’s Tale is to watch there is still a level of brilliance that keeps us tuning in and on the edge of our seats week to week. It is a fear that this type of bleak and dystopian future could actually somehow exist one day. The mere thought that fertile women would be kept as house slaves and are ritually raped and abused is simply nauseating and while viewing each episode your only hope is that they can somehow manage to find a way out.

For as tragic a story as The Handmaid’s Tale is, it is also not without some shreds of hope sprinkled in few and far between. It almost feels that if anyone is ever able to take a few steps forward, they are almost always sucked right behind once again. Even when it appears that all hope is lost, we always see June, as well as, other characters such as Emily and Nick manage to hold on to just a few shards of hope that they will someday find a way out of this mess.

While season one of the series shed some light on various aspects of social injustice and brutality, season two gives us a much more in-depth look at those same aspects of social commentary, just in a more intimate way. This series is intense and certainly not for the faint of heart, however it is both thought-provoking and brilliant at the very same time.

Season two shows us more sheds like on certain general aspects of humanity such as guilt, reprieve, suffering and forgiveness and while many of the ideals put forth in the series are a bit far-fetched they are at the same time scarily relevant and relatable in a obscure way.

We adored the second season just as much as the first and we only feel that this series still has way more under their belt to dish out to us in season three! Just wait until you see the finale! People will certainly be talking about this season’s ending for quite some time!
