Joker Standalone Movie Gets Title & 2019 Release Date

Just days after getting confirmation that the Joaquin Phoenix-starring standalone joker movie was given the green light, Warner Bros. has now dated the film for an October 2019 release. According to THR, not only does the film boast an October 4, 2019 release date, but the official title for the film moving forward is simply ‘Joker‘.

Even though the film has been rumored since around this time last year, we do know that ‘War Dogs’ director Todd Phillips is helming the picture, which is being described as “an exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” The film is reported to have a fall start date with a budget of $55 million, a fairly modest amount for a superhero tentpole film. Beyond this info, plot details are scarce but the film is meant to be “darker and more experimental in tone.”

Although originally tight-lipped about his lead role in the film, Phoenix recently had this to say about this interpretation of the Joker:
”I wouldn’t quite classify this as like any genre. I wouldn’t say it’s a superhero movie, or a studio movie or a … It feels unique, and I think more then anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that’s exciting. I think, underneath the excitement of these films, and the size of them, there are these incredible characters that are dealing with real life struggles. And sometimes that is uncovered and exposed, and sometimes it isn’t, and so I always felt, like, there were characters in comics that were really interesting and deserve the opportunity to be kind of studied. And so I think that’s what Todd sees appealing about this idea.”
The title itself is elegant enough, but I’m curious to see if Warner Bros. announces anything a this Saturday’s SDCC 2018 panel. Make sure to check back as we learn more int eh coming months!
