‘The Robot Chicken Walking Dead Special’ DVD Review

Seth Green‘s and Matthew Senreich‘s Stoopid Buddy Stoodios has had fun blending toys and stop-motion to parody some of the biggest franchises in pop culture. The Stoopid Buddy produced Robot Chicken has been their brainchild and a great way to get away with making fun of everything even things they are fans of. Robot Chicken has had special dedicated to Star Wars, DC Comics and even Christmas. In season 9, Robot Chicken took on a popular series which is still running today and decided to make a special episode dedicated to the series and making fun of it. The series? None-other-than AMC’s The Walking DeadThe Robot Chicken Walking Dead is available today on Blu-ray and DVD and here’s our review of the DVD.

If you have watched Robot Chicken on Adult Swim, you know that the show doesn’t pull any punches with anyone they plan on making fun of. Well the same is done in the Walking Dead special but what makes it different this time around is that Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Walking Dead producer Scott M. Gimple, some of the Walking Dead cast current and past and Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick are all involved with this special. You may think okay, if the cast and creators of Walking Dead are involved, then they won’t go overboard making too many jokes. That is simply not the case.

What makes this special funnier is that you have the cast making fun of themselves. You get to see most of your favorite cast members have a funny side such as Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride. Chandler Riggs, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Josh McDermitt, Jeffery Dean Morgan and even past cast members like Scott Wilson, and both Michael Rooker and Jon Bernthal both have singing numbers. Chris Hardwick, Daniel Radcliffe and Robert Kirkman each lend their voices to the special. Some of the cast is left out only because Stoopid Buddy could not afford them, which is mentioned in the special features.

Robot Chicken does a pretty good job covering all of the big highlights from the Walking Dead series. The special covers season one all the way up to season seven, so you can even get caught up on The Walking Dead while watching this quick 22 minute special. That 22 minute runtime is also something that I wish was different. I felt like it needed to be longer. With the special features, the amount of entertainment this DVD provides is roughly about 45 to 50 minutes.

Now I will breakdown all of the special features below.

Inside the Robot Chicken Special: Look Who’s Walking: This is pretty much self-explanatory. It’s a more in-depth look at how this special came together from how the idea started to all who were involved. It includes insight from all those involved. It was the lengthy out of the special features and pretty enjoyable.

Cut Sketches: Another self-explanatory feature. Here they show you sketches that were cut from the special and were animated storyboards. Before each sketch, the writers who write said sketch would introduce the sketch.

Sketches to Die For: This feature is where the cast and crew discuss their favorite sketches.

Bawkard: Is the cast and crew just bawking the Robot Chicken theme song. It’s kind of pointless and pretty much just added for content.

Behind-the-Screams: In this feature, we hear more from the people that made this special work such as the set designers, camera crew, etc. They all talk about what they did and what their favorite parts are as a zombie sneaks up from behind them to scare them.

The special was entertaining, it was funny but not as funny as the other Robot Chicken specials. But I’m glad Robot Chicken decided to do it. I mean where else can you see a preverted sex-crazed unicorn helping Rick fight off zombies for how long the special is, I felt it would have been even better if it were longer. I can’t really justify paying $14.97 for a 22 minute episode and about 50 minutes max counting the special features. I mean if you have been collecting these DVDs and can afford to then by all means go for it. None-the-less it’s a much watch for any fan of The Walking Dead or Robot Chicken.
