Ryan Murphy, the creator of popular shows such as American Horror Story, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, Feud and others, is making the jump from Fox to Netflix.
Murphy has signed to Netflix for a record-setting deal valued at $250 million-$300 million. The five-year deal which will begin July 1 when his deal with 20th Century Fox expires, will have Murphy produce new series and films exclusively for Netflix.
Ryan Murphy had this to say in a statement:
“The history of this moment is not lost on me. I am a gay kid from Indiana who moved to Hollywood in 1989 with $55 in savings in my pocket, so the fact that my dreams have crystallized and come true in such a major way is emotional and overwhelming to me. I am awash in genuine appreciation for Ted Sarandos, Reed Hastings, and Cindy Holland at Netflix for believing in me and the future of my company, which will continue to champion women, minorities, and LGBTQ heroes and heroines, and I am honored and grateful to continue my partnership with my friends and peers at Fox on our existing shows.”
Murphy has previously worked on shows such as the upcoming FX series Pose and Fox’s newest hit series 9-1-1. He is also currently working on The Politician and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest spin-off titled Ratched, both for Netflix.
There’s speculation that one of the big reasons Murphy made the deal was because of the uncertainty surrounding the Fox and Disney deal. A deal which would give rights to various Fox properties over to Disney but the has not yet been completed and could take up to a year. As of the past couple weeks, Comcast is rumored to possibly make a bid on the 20th Century Fox company.
