New Line has released the first trailer for the Melissa McCarthy-led comedy ‘Life of the Party‘. The plot of the film revolves around a middle-aged mom named Deanna who, after a seemingly nasty divorce, decides to re-enroll in college. There’s just one problem, it’s the same college as her daughter. Reinventing herself as “Dee Rock” she ends up embracing the wild antics that come with senior year in college.
The film comes from McCarthy and director/husband Ben Falcone. Falcone previously directed McCarthy in ‘The Boss‘ as well as ‘Tammy‘, so we should king of know what to expect here. Although I’m not a huge fan of McCarthy’s more abrasive characters, this actually kind of seems like it could potentially be a fun comedy. I’ll admit that based on this trailer, it seems that the film’s plot bears somewhat of a resemblance to something like ‘Back to School‘, but there’s enough different here that it should’t feel like an unofficial reboot of the Rodney Dangerfield classic.
Either way you shake it, ‘Life of the Party’ seems to see McCarthy stepping out of her comfort zone a bit, which is a nice change. In addition to McCarthy, ‘Life of the Party’ also stars Gillian Jacobs, Maya Rudolph, Julie Bowen, Matt Walsh, Molly Gordon, Stephen Root, Jacki Weaver, Jessie Ennis, Adria Arjona, Debby Ryan, and Jimmy O. Yang.

“When her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime dedicated housewife Deanna (McCarthy) turns regret into re-set by going back to college…landing in the same class and school as her daughter, who’s not entirely sold on the idea. Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna—now Dee Rock—embraces freedom, fun and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected.”
