We just got the trailer for Lucasfilm’s latest effort, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story‘ during the super bowl, but it seems that everyone is hard at work planning future installments in the ‘Star Wars‘ universe. According to Starwars.com, ‘Game of Thrones’ creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going to a galaxy far, far away with a new series of films in the franchise. The duo are set to write and produce the series, which will be a separate entity from Rian Johnson‘s recently announced trilogy of new films. Here’s what Lucasfilm head-honcho Kathleen Kennedy said about the hiring of the duo in a statement:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
While details are understandably sparse at this point, i’m sure we will hear more down the road when the new season of ‘Game of Therones’ is complete and the duo are able to focus their efforts on this new series of films. Here’s what Benioff and Weiss had to say in a joint statement about developing the entirely new series:
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
While films like ‘Solo‘ and the upcoming J.J. Abrams-helmed ‘Star Wars: Episode IX‘ will be more familiar entries in the ‘Star Wars’ canon it seems that Kennedy and co. are hard at work developing new stories with fresh characters that will enrich the film universe rather than detract from it. Hopefully this will be true with such a strong pedigree behind the series.
