First Look at Secret Soderbergh Project ‘Unsane’

Steven Soderbergh once again returns to the big screen and continuing to make headlines. After a short 4 year retirement, where the acclaimed the director focused his efforts in television, Soderbergh made his return to features last year with Logan Lucky. Now that Soderbergh is back, he is off to the races and has already shot his follow-up feature titled Unsane, unbeknownst to anyone. The same day as the film was announced to the public the trailer was released.

Here is the official (and very brief) synopsis for the upcoming thriller Unsane.

“A young woman is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she faces her greatest fear — not knowing if it is real or part of her delusion.”

Despite being the “official” synopsis, this might be the most generic description of a story we have seen play out a thousand times. Unsane focuses on a protagonist played by Claire Foy (The Crown, Wolf Hall), dealing with a digital stalker who won’t leave her alone. Her attempts to get law enforcement involved somehow lead to her being confined in an institution, in the time tested plot line of who is really the insane one?”

If the story sounds okay but isn’t quite enough to draw you in hopefully the technology behind the film will be. Mr. Soderbergh has shot this secret project entirely with iPhones. Although he is not the first to shoot a feature film using his phone, he quite arguably the most recognizable. This is certainly not meant to take away from a movie like Tangerine and what director Sean Baker was able to accomplish. Movies like that are what led us to such a prominent director using such accessible technology. Something that is an inspiration to every aspiring film maker out there.

Soderbergh recognizes that some filmmakers shoot on an iPhone for budget or PR reasons, but that’s not what drove his decision. The choice to shoot on an iPhone was an aesthetic one.

According to Indiewire:

“Anybody going to see this movie who has no idea of the backstory to the production will have no idea this was shot on the phone. That’s not part of the conceit.” […]

“People forget, this is a 4k capture,” said Soderbergh, who was long a passionate advocate for the high-end RED cameras. “I’ve seen it 40 feet tall. It looks like velvet. This is a gamechanger to me.”

Similar to ’10 Cloverfield Lane’, this trailer came out of no where. The entire project was shot and edited in secret, which is something rare in todays industry. We also got a release date of March 23, meaning the movie will come out only 2 months after the trailer dropping.

You can check Unsane in theaters March 23, 2018.
