Weekend Watch: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ VFX Reel; ‘Lady Bird’ Featurette; & More

Welcome to The Weekend Watch, where we highlight some of the best videos released throughout the week. Whether it be short films, behind the scenes videos, video essays, the only requirement is that they are about–in some shape of form–our favorite movies and TV shows!

In the first edition of Weekend Watch, we have a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales‘ VFX reel, a great ‘Lady Bird‘ Featurette, and a cool video essay detailing the differences between the (many) different versions of ‘Blade Runner‘. Plus, a lengthy video essay that details Steven Spielberg‘s visual style in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark‘ and a hilarious compilation video titled ‘Superman: Mustache Edition‘.

First up, we have a VFX breakdown from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales‘ (via Art of VFX). Ever wondered how the filmmakers brought those ghost sharks to life? Or how they brought Javier Bardem‘s Captain Salazar to life? This video gives some cool insight into the process of how those effects (and many more) were accomplished for the film.

Next, we have a ‘Lady Bird‘ featurette (via A24) that highlights the ensemble that writer/director Greta Gerwig was able to pull together from the production of the film. Although short, the featurette does a great job of summing up the cast’s enthusiasm for the film.

Here’s a cool video (via Slate) that details the major differences between the 7 different cuts of Ridley Scott‘s ‘Blade Runner‘. If you’ve ever wondered which of these cuts to watch, or are just curious what the more subtle variations of the versions entail, this video’s got you covered.

Up next is a very detailed video essay on the way that Steven Spielberg shot that famous chase sequence from ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. What’s really cool here is how author Antonios Papantoniou breaks down the visual language of the entire chase, shot by shot.

Finally, Darth Blender made a hilarious music video to Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” that features a mustache-touting Superman throughout. The genius of this video is mostly due to the mustache, which pretty much makes Henry Cavill look like the late, great Freddie Mercury. What is really surprising here is the fact that the footage from ‘Man of Steel‘ and ‘Batman v. Superman‘ seem to match so well with the music. Who would have thought?
